The Municipal Chief Executive of GA South, Joseph Nyanney, has noted that flooding in Accra cannot be tackled by the assemblies alone.
Speaking on MOVEMENT IN THE MORNING political show on Thursday, Mr. Nyanney explained that there have been so much effort by the various assemblies in tackling the trend; however it will take an effective collaboration to deal with the menace.
He made an example using his assembly, explaining that the Roads and Highways Minister, Akwasi Amoako-Atta, was there in 2018, after some areas had experienced flooding to ascertain the condition.
“In 2018, I had the opportunity to invite the Roads and Highways Minister to some areas within my assembly to ascertain for himself how dire the situation was,” he disclosed.
He noted that a committee was set up by the sector minister, to map out solutions in dealing with the menace.
In responding to allegations that the assemblies do receive bribes and therefore issue building permits to people to erect structures where they are not supposed to do so, he said that he could speak on authority that since he became a Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), he has never issued any building permit.
The GA south MCE welcomed President Akufo-Addo’s directive to demolish all illegal structures on waterways; adding that it has reignited them to do more in ensuring that flooding is drastically dealt with, although there are laws backing their actions.
