A 69.88 Million Dollar Grant For Scaling-UP Renewable Energy Programme Signed.

 

The governmcent of Ghana will soon receive a grant of 69.88 million dollars for Scaling-UP Renewable energy Programme (SREP) for island communities in the country.

The agreement was signed by the Energy Minister,Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh on behalf of the government on Tuesday 25th May 2022.

Development partners for the project include African Development Bank (AfDB) Climate Investment Fund (CIF) and the Swiss Government Federation.

The Ministry of Energy (MoEn) and the Energy Commission (EC) are the implementing agencies.

The Finance Minister,Mr Ken Ofori Atta commended the project partners for their support.

Objective of the project is to increase access to clean and reliable electricity service and support low carbon socio-economic development.


This project seeks to support Ghana to electrify island communities and contribute to achieving universal access to electricity by 2030 as well as unlock financing opportunities in the communities to achieve accelerated and sustainable development of the country’s renewable energy sector.

The Ghana SREP project consists of the design, engineering, supply, construction, installation, testing and commissioning of mini grid systems, standalone home systems that are located in the island communities and Net metering with solar PV systems in the distribution network of the Distribution Utilities in Ghana.

The Project is in three main components and will be implemented over a 4- year period from 2022 to 2025 .

Direct beneficiaries of the project include 70 communities across the 9 island districts which will be provided with mini grid; 505 communities in 11 districts which will be provided with standalone PV systems.

In all 1,089 public buildings , 6890 households and 6,001 SMEs will benefit from the solar PV net metering component.
