Legendary Ghana forward Asamoah Gyan believes politics has been the main reason for the country’s AFCON trophy drought.
The four times African champions have not won the Nations Cup since 1982 even though the Black Stars have been close three times.
Ghana lost to Ivory Coast twice in the final in 1992 and in 2015 and those two defeats were sandwiched by another AFCON heartbreak to Egypt in 2010.
Gyan, 35, insists the politics of government in power and citizens have affected the team at major tournaments.
“I have been with the national team for years and it is the desire of every player to win the Afcon but the politics among government in power and the citizens has hampered the team’s chances of winning the trophy,” Gyan told Asempa FM, as quoted by Adomonline.
The Legon Cities forward also quizzed the rational behind making bonuses public before major competitions.
“Why should the winning bonuses of the team be made public before any major tournament?,” asked Gyan.
The Black Stars will begin another AFCON journey next year, where they have been drawn alongside Morocco, Gabon and Comoros Island in Group C of the Nations Cup.
