Emi Martinez Reacts To Argentina’s World Cup Win

Emi Martinez believes it was Argentina’s ‘destiny’ to win the 2022 World Cup following their 4-2 penalties victory over France.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper was instrumental and put in another incredible display to help fire his nation to a first World Cup win in 36 years, coming up with a number of big saves, saving a penalty in the shootout and putting off Aurelien Tchouameni who missed his spot kick.

He now adds a World Cup and the tournament’s Golden Glove award to his suddenly impressive trophy cabinet that also contains the Copa America.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Martinez delivered his verdict: “It was a very complicated match, they came back to equalise in the game but it was our destiny to suffer.”

The 30-year-old continued: “All that I have dreamed of has been achieved. I have no words for it. I was calm during the penalty shoot-out, and everything went as we wanted.

“I left very young for England. I dedicate this victory to all my family.”

Martinez only made his full Argentina debut last year in a World Cup qualifier, before suddenly being thrust into the spotlight as Lionel Scaloni’s first choice for the 2021 Copa America.

There, he proved key to his side’s fortunes as they ended a major trophy drought and embarked on a 36-game unbeaten run.

He now returns to Villa a World Cup winner after signing in 2020 from Arsenal, where he spent most of his time as an understudy.
