The Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Hon Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has said the flagbearer of his party the Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has reposed his confidence in him saying he should not flinch or waver but to continue doing his good work in seeking for accountability and transparency.
He made the statement after a visit to Dr. Bawumia’s private residence. The Leader posted on his Facebook wall and said, “Dr. Bawumia expressed his full confidence in my leadership of the Minority.”
The comments of “confidence in my leadership” came up as a result of Hon Afenyo-Markin and the Minority’s quest for a full probe into the alleged ¢22 billion Bank of Ghana and GoldBod losses which has to do with the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
Hon Afenyo-Markin Markin over the recent days has been on the neck of GoldBod’s CEO Mr. Sammy Gyamfi to make detailed revelations on the losses, saying his side would table in a motion to summon Sammy Gyamfi to the House for questioning.
On the back of those calls, Mr. Sammy Gyamfi hit back with words of defense seemingly creating a war between the two and not about an accountability probe into the losses. With Mr. Gyamfi calling Hon Afenyo Markin an extortionist and challenging him to sue.
It is on the back of those issues that Afenyo Markin said the flagbearer urged him to not shy away from.
“He urged me to remain focused on the loss of over $1.7 billion, equivalent to 1.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), arising from the operations of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, a figure confirmed by the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) own August 2026 report,” he said.
The Minority Leader further stated that Dr. Bawumia advised him to not be distracted by public sentiments including the loud noises on television and radio but to do his work as leader of the minority, tasked with keeping government on its toes.
He said he assured Dr. Bawumia of a Minority which will do its best to not walk away from the issues, but one committed to ensuring that the public gets the accountability they deserve.
“I assured him that this is a national task the Minority intends to prosecute to the fullest extent of our ability, with the very best of intentions, and minded always by the interests of the Ghanaian people,” he added.
