Decision To Make Ken Ofori-Atta A Caretaker Minister Was Politically & Morally Wrong- Nana Obiri Boahen

A former deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has described the decision by President Akufo-Addo to make Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta a caretaker minister for the Trade and Industry ministry, as “politically and morally” wrong.

Nana Obiri Boahen who a lawyer by profession,  stated on Wontumi TV that the decision to make Ken Ofori-Atta a caretaker minister was constitutionally and legally right but added that the decision sent a wrong signal to Ghanaians who are baying for the blood of the finance minister.

Constitutionally, legally it was right but politically and morally, it was wrong and dangerous. His own MP say they don’t want him. It was sending a wrong signal; the advisors of the president should have prompted him”, Nana Obiri Boahen said.

Ken Ofori-Atta, the finance minister, has been nominated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to serve as the ministry of trade and industry’s acting minister.

This comes after Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten, the actual minister, resigned.

On January 5, 2023, Mr. Kyerematen submitted his resignation to the president.

It is anticipated that Mr. Ofori-Atta would hold the job up to the appointment of a formal minister. On Friday, January 6, 2023, a communiqué bearing the signature of Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications in the Office of the President, made this announcement.

“The President has asked the Minister for Finance, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, to act as caretaker Minister at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, until a substantive appointment is made”.
