The campaign team for former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, has thrown its weight behind former General Secretary John Boadu in the party’s National Chairmanship race.
The team announced the decision in a press statement issued on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, following what it said were extensive consultations with grassroots members, campaign leadership, party elders and other stakeholders across the country.
According to the statement, a meeting was held between the leadership of the Wontumi Campaign and Chairman Wontumi, it saod the endorsement of Mr Boadu was not a decision taken out of convenience or political pressure, but it is a deliberate move intended to advance the interests of the NPP and strengthen it ahead of the 2028 general elections.
“This is not a casual endorsement, nor a decision born of convenience or political pressure. It is a deliberate and strategic choice, guided by what we believe serves the best interest of the New Patriotic Party and its future,” the statement said.
The campaign said Mr Boadu’s institutional experience and knowledge of the NPP’s organisational structures complemented the grassroots made him a good fit for the position.
“John Boadu brings extensive institutional experience, deep knowledge of the Party’s organisational structures, strong relationships across its ranks and a proven record of frontline service,” it stated.
The campaign team argued that combining its grassroots mobilisation strength with Mr Boadu’s organisational experience would provide the NPP with the right leadership to rebuild the party and return it to power in 2028.
It described the partnership as one that would bring together “grassroots strength” and “institutional experience” while improving the party’s organisational capacity.
It also appealed to members of its support base to transfer their organisational and mobilisation efforts to Mr Boadu’s campaign.
“Wherever you organised for Wontumi, organise for John Boadu. Wherever you mobilised for Wontumi, mobilise for John Boadu. Wherever you stood for Wontumi, stand for John Boadu,” the statement said.
It further called for unity within the NPP and cautioned against turning the internal contest into a division within the party and said the decision was not intended to be a declaration of war against other aspirants.
“We will campaign vigorously, organise relentlessly and make our case to delegates with conviction — but we will do so without insults, intimidation or unnecessary attacks on fellow members of our political tradition,” the statement said.
