Chairman Wontumi calls On The Police To Be Up And Doing In Dealing With Rising Lawlessness
Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Boasiako fondly called, Chairman Wontumi, has taken the security agencies to task for dealing leniently with some NDC supporters who have taken the law into their own hands in recent times
Chairman Wontumi who expressed serious concerns by the police’s lukewarm attitude in responding to the glaring breach of the law by NDC demonstrators said it is time the law enforcement agency rose up to their responsibilities.
He expressed disgust at the invasion of police stations by some high profile NDC personnel anytime their party followers are arrested for disturbing the peace. This embarrassing situation has become more rampant since Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was declared the winner by the Electoral Commission (EC) in the recent Presidential elections.
“These lawlessness can easily be nipped in the bud if the Police live up to their responsibilities.” He said
Chairman Wontumi referred in particular to a recent case when former President John Dramani Mahama got himself entangled in one of such cases of NDC lawlessness in Kumasi.
“It does not augur well for our democracy for the police to be refusing to act in situations where people with impunity take the law into their own hands.” He lamented.
Chairman Wontumi recalled a similar situation in Nigeria when the late Chief Moshood Abiola, who was some years back Nigeria’s richest person declared himself the President after a disputed election. He was arrested and detained by security personnel and hoped lessons would be learnt from that incident.
“Chief Abiola was very influential because of his wealth yet he was arrested and detained when he went against the laws of his country and that should tell you that if the police decide to work, nothing can hinder them from discharging their professional duties.”’ He noted.
The charismatic Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP wondered why the Justices of the Supreme Court who delivered the verdict in the famous 2012 election petition which went in favour of the NDC were hailed.
“But these same people who constitute the membership of the highest court of the land are today being vilified by the NDC. “ He said
Chairman Wontumi again recalled that rubber bullets were fired at him during John Mahama’s time while two persons Gabby Okyere Darko and one O.B who are all close relations of Nana Addo were assaulted when they took part in one of the” Let My Vote Count “ demonstrations in Accra.
According to Chairman Wontumi, a gentleman by name Justice Adjakuma from the Volta Region also lost one of his eyes during the ‘Let my Vote Count’ demonstration in September 2015. ” He recalled.
“I was hospitalized following the incident and had to be rushed to a hospital where a woman took very good care of me to ensure I survive the traumatic experience.” He said.
