Build Capacity To Insist On Accountability On The Continent – President Akufo-Addo To Pan-African Parliament
Ghana’s President, Nana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has emphasized the need for African Parliaments to build capacity in order to exercise proper oversight over the activities of the Executive and to insist on accountability at all levels of life.
He made the call when he met and interacted with Ghana’s delegation to the Pan-African Parliament in Midrand, South Africa where he addressed the ongoing Ordinary Session of the Fifth Parliament of the Pan-African Parliament as the Special Guest of Honour on Monday, May 24, 2021.
Present were some Members of Parliament (MP) from Ghana who are also Members of the Pan African Parliament, including First Deputy Speaker and MP for Bekwai, Joe Osei Owusu; Deputy Majority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh; Minority Chief Whip and MP for Asawase, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak; MP for Asutifi, Collins Dauda and Mfantseman MP, Ophelia Hayford.
In a subsequent Facebook post, the President said “it is for the good of our countries that Parliaments on the continent develop the capacity to insist on accountability in all aspects of our lives, especially in our governance, for no institution is better suited to do this than the one composed of the representatives of the people.”
He said “I am a strong believer in the work of Parliament, and, as we strive to deepen continental integration and strengthen ties that exist between our respective countries, we should create room for our respective Parliaments to learn from each other, and, through that process, enhance the prospects of continental integration.”
The President added that “it is one of the best ways to realize the objects of Agenda 2063, and help create ‘The Africa We All Want’ in our time.”
