A British man has died in front of his sibling after being hit by a tail rotor when he got out of a helicopter while on holiday in Greece.
The 21-year-old didn’t know the propeller was still spinning when he headed towards the back of the aircraft in Sparta, near Athens.
His parents were in another helicopter on its way to the same spot following a flight from Mykonos.
However, the pilot radioed to their helicopter at 6.20pm yesterday evening to tell them about the accident.
A source told The Sun: ‘The pilot saw what had happened and decided to spare the parents the sight of their son – it was horrendous.
‘He flew on to another helipad at Athens where the couple were consoled as it was confirmed that the young man was dead.
‘The cause is being investigated but it remains unclear why this happened – or was allowed to happen when rotor blades pose such an obvious danger.’
Emergency services rushed to the private helipad on the outskirts of the Greek capital.
But it is thought the young man died instantly when he was struck by the helicopter blades.
It is still unclear how the incident happened but the events that led to it are being investigated.
