In a surprising twist, Alan Kyerematen, a prominent figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced his departure from the party and declared his candidacy as an independent in the upcoming 2024 elections.
Kyerematen’s decision has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, as he has been a dedicated member of the NPP for many years. Known as a seasoned politician, he has played significant roles in various government positions.
However, during a press conference held in Accra on Monday, September 25, Mr. Kyerematen outlined his reasons for parting ways with the NPP. He stated, “Under the circumstances and given the context provided, I wish to use this platform to announce that I am honorably resigning with immediate effect from the New Patriotic Party to contest for the high office of the President of the Republic of Ghana in the 2024 General Elections as an Independent Presidential Candidate.”
Kyerematen emphasized his commitment to addressing pressing issues facing the country, including economic development, job creation, and social welfare. He believes that running as an independent candidate will enable him to better serve the interests of the Ghanaian people.
His decision to run as an independent candidate presents a unique challenge to the established political order in Ghana and has the potential to reshape the political landscape.
Notably, this is the second time Mr. Kyerematen has left the NPP. In 2008, following a bitter loss in the 2007 presidential primary and feelings of being sidelined, he resigned from the NPP. However, he was later politically coerced to rejoin the party.
Kyerematen’s latest departure from the NPP and his decision to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections mark a significant moment in Ghanaian politics.
