Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has called for a national, non-partisan approach to uncovering the details behind the reported GH¢22 billion in GoldBod/Bank of Ghana losses, urging an end to the politicisation of the matter.
Speaking to the media on the losses and other matters of national concern, Afenyo-Markin urged every Ghanaian to speak up. “If all of us do not add our voice and speak about the losses, I’m sorry, we can’t make it,” he said.
Assessing the government’s handling of GoldBod and Bank of Ghana operations, the Minority Leader said a stronger cedi does not, on its own, signal an end to the country’s harsh economic conditions. Sustaining that stability, he said, requires discipline.
“Today the cedi is relatively stable good news, and we commend them for it. But to sustain it, you don’t have to be reckless. To sustain it, you need to tighten up and put in prudent measures,” he said.
He pressed for answers on the specifics of the losses. “What are the loopholes? How much is GoldBod buying the doré gold for? How much commission is GoldBod paying?” he asked, insisting the conversation should rise above party lines.
Afenyo-Markin called for an end to the political bickering that has seen opposing camps attack each other’s personalities rather than engage with the substance of the issue.
“Let’s elevate the conversation. Let’s forget about personal attacks. Let’s not treat this like the usual NPP-NDC banter,”
The matter, he stressed, is a serious one a “bread and butter” issue with direct consequences for the economy.
According to Afenyo-Markin, the GH¢22 billion in question is large enough to meet significant national needs. He noted that while the government complains it lacks the fiscal space to accommodate teachers and nurses, it continues to rack up losses while resisting accountability.
