The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has issued a scathing critique of the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration, claiming that democracy and free speech in Ghana are “under siege”.

In a press statement released on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Dr. Bawumia expressed “great concern” over what he described as an “endless assault” on the fundamental rights of NPP officers, activists, and supporters across the country by the NDC Government.

He alleged that these attacks, characterized by arrests, detentions, and “unconscionable bail conditions,” have been a persistent feature of the administration since it took office on January 7, 2025.

The NPP leader specifically cited the recent arrest and detention of David Essandoh for lamenting on social media about the return of “dumsor” (power outages), as well as the “bizarre decision” to take the NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, into custody as clear acts of intimidation.

Dr. Bawumia condemned what he termed an “unholy collaboration” between the Executive, state investigative agencies, and certain elements within the judiciary, arguing that such actions undermine free speech and are setting Ghana’s democracy backward.

He further served notice to state officers involved in these activities, warning that a “day of accountability” will eventually come and that the abuse of state power will be accounted for.

Concluding his message, Dr. Bawumia urged NPP “Patriots” to stay firm and refuse to succumb to intimidation while continuing their civic duty to hold the Government accountable to its promises.

He emphasized that the party fought hard for the nation’s democracy and cannot surrender it to those who currently possess “temporary power”.
