Baby Monkey Delivered Through C-section At Kumasi Zoo Dies After Mother Rejected It

According to the veterinary Doctor and the manager of the Kumasi Zoo, Dr. Meyir .Y. Ziekah who performed the cesarean section for the Monalisa monkey to give birth, the babe male primate monkey has died after the mother rejected it.

He explained that, ” when she recovered from the anesthesia, she was a bit aggressive towards the infant and separated from her. Later on, she accepted the infant but in the night she became aggressive again and later rejected her completely and unfortunately, we lost her,”

Dr. Ziekah in an interview with Oheneba Nana Asiedu on Wontumi Radio/TV said that, they did their best for the baby to survive but unfortunately it died two days after it was rejected.

“Myself and the other staff of the Kumasi Zoo are very close to the animals so if anything happens to them, we feel very hurtful.” He lamented

The veterinary Doctor indicated that, the Monalisa monkey would be sad after carrying the baby for couple of months and will lose it.

Meanwhile according to him, the C-section on animals is not something new but since it was the first time it happened in Kumasi and Ghana at large, people are amazed.

The news went viral yesterday that, a Mona monkey at the Kumasi Zoological Gardens has given birth to babe male primate through a C-section.

The surgery was conducted by, Dr. Meyir Y. Ziekah, a veterinary Doctor and manager of the Kumasi Zoo.

He said that, the C-section was done after the monkey had difficulty with natural delivery due to a very narrow birth canal.

According to Dr Ziekah, the one hour and 20 minutes surgery was “complex,” due to the lack of the necessary equipment and tools.

“She was in labour for three days and we have been monitoring it. On the first day, we realised that the birth canal was quite small and the infant had a big head that couldn’t pass through the birth canal and the animal was getting weak so we took the decision,” Dr Ziekah narrated.
