Scrapping betting tax will be suicidal for Ghana’s economy- John Kwakye

Dr. John Kwakye, an economist and director of research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), has stated that he believes that gambling ought to be subject to taxes. He claims that it would be financially foolish and suicidal to leave betting untaxed. He wrote in a post on his X page that,”“Betting will become an increasing part of the economy with a huge tax revenue potential. Leaving betting untaxed would, therefore, be fiscally ill-advised and, indeed, suicidal!” The Mahama government is working to repeal the 10% betting tax, as promised during the 2024 election season. Ashanti Regional Minister Fails First Minor Security Test; Coming Event Cast Their Shadow – George Opoku Amponsah writes…..

The 11th of February, 2025 will go in history as black Tuesday in Ghana's democracy as Ashanti Region fails to successfully elect a representative to the Council of State. A simple constitutional exercise with an electoral College of just 86, sellected from all 43 administrative Districts, Municipals and a Metropolitan Assembly in the Ashanti Region was marred by a well-cordinated chaos, ostensibly by NDC hooligans at no less a venue, than the Regional Coordinating Council, the office of the Ashanti Regional Minister. In this era of information technology where every citizen is a disguised journalist, I find the action of…

Armed Military Personnel Stormed Former Finance Minister’s Home

In an alarming display of state-sanctioned intimidation, armed military men, police personnel, and plainclothes security operatives stormed the residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta on the morning of Tuesday, February 11, 2025. This brazen attack is nothing short of an assault on democracy and the rule of law. Eyewitnesses report that despite demands from Mr Ofori-Atta’s on-site security team for a warrant, the armed personnel forcefully broke into the house, ransacked the premises, searched every corner, found nothing, and left. This lawless operation carried out with military backing, signals a disturbing shift towards authoritarian tactics—where brute force replaces due…
