Assembly Members Should Be Resourced To Work Effectively- Head of Local Gov’t Service
The Head of Local Government Service, Dr. Nana Ato Arthur has indicated that, Assembly Members play a huge role in the development of the Districts and that they must be empowered to work effectively.
According to him, due to the challenges they have, a section of them would be out of place in the four years mandate the residents will grant him.
In an interview on the Kumasi-based Wontumi Radio/TV, Dr. Nana Ato Arthur said, “Assembly Members are not paid and that is the challenges they are facing.”
“Some will spend the money without using it to develop the District but there will be checks and balances to monitor them,” he said.
He noted that, section 936 of the Local Government acts indicates that, Assembly Members, before going for Assembly sitting must engage the residents to know their plights.
But the Head of Local Government Service lamented that, since they are not resourced, they don’t honour the task.
However, Dr. Nana Ato Arthur affirmed that, Assembly Members have the right to question Coordinators, Directors, Engineers and Contractors about their works at the local level.
