The Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has described former President John Mahama as a confused man following the latter’s claim that it was the National Democratic Congress and not the New Patriotic Party that introduced the free Senior High School policy.
“Today the NDC and its flagbearer is looking us in the eye and saying they started free SHS…Are they confused? Or do they think we have short memories?” were the direct question he put to Mr. Mahama.
The presidential candidate of the NDC, Mr. Mahama, says the free-SHS programme was started by his government in 2015.
He said the current government poorly implemented the programme.
But Vice President Bawumia responded by noting that “thankfully, their prediction of doom on free SHS has not materialized. The results of the students show quality has not been compromised.”
In an address which was centred on the future of Ghana’s economy, Vice President Bawumia advised voters to remember on Election Day that it was the NDC that bastardized the free SHS policy that was proposed by President Akufo-Addo in 2016 during his campaign.
According to him, despite the harsh criticism that the NDC and their flagbearer threw at President Akufo-Addo, he remained steady and stuck to his gun because he believed the implementing the free SHS was going to benefit all Ghanaians.
“As you go into the election remember that it was the NDC that bastardized the free SHS policy which was proposed by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. They said if they had $2 billion, they will not use it on free SHS…They went to Supreme Court to stop the free SHS. They run 40 ads against it”, he said.
