Former President John Dramani Mahama has sarcastically defended a denigrating post he made about the people of Akyem stating emphatically that the piece referring to them as “sakawa boys” was a good post.
Mr. Mahama has come under incessant attack for promoting a post that referred to Akyem people as “Sakawa Boys”.
In an interview on CTV which was monitored by Wontumionline.com, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) refused to apologize for his comment but rather stated that the description was a good comment.
Rather than apologize, Mr. Mahama praised the writer of the post, Hon. Adongo for piecing together a statement that insults all the people of Akyem.
In praising the NDC MP who originally wrote the article, Mr. Mahama stated “I didn’t say anybody is Sakawa, I just reposted it. Adongo made a very good argument and It didn’t come to me as something I thought about. He made cogent argument”.
Prior to Mr. Mahama’s interview, the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who is also an Akyem, responded to the disparaging remarks noting that he would never disrespect any tribe in Ghana.
President Akufo-Addo in an interview at the Jubilee House with Oman fm which was monitored by Wontumionline.com, stated that the posture of the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, is divisive and one that is not befitting of a political leader.
On John Mahama’s Facebook page, he posted an article described the people from Akyem in the Eastern region as “Sakawa Boys”.
But President Akufo-Addo in his interview highlighted that “it is sad for a person who has been President before to say Akyem people are sakawa people”.
The President therefore called on civil society groups and religious leaders to come out and condemn the statements.
In President Akufo-Addo’s view, former President Mahama must be told his statements were “unnecessary” adding that “imagine if someone from the NPP had said something bad about Gonjas”.
