Akua Donkor For Parliament
Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) Presidential candidate Madam Akua Donkor is to gravitate towards Parliament with one objective: To ask of the views of the Honourable Men and Women on what exactly Ghana’s constitution says about the maximum number of years an elected President of the Republic of Ghana can serve as the occupant of the highest office of the land.
Madam Akua Donkor who dropped the hint of her intention to seek fresh understanding of a constitutional provision on Wontumi TV/Radio on Wednesday in a programme hosted by Oheneba Nana Asiedu said “the intention of John Dramani Mahama to seek a further four year term of office would make his term exceed the limited eight years limited period.”
“The constitution is explicit on the term of office of Ghana’s President. It does not exceed eight years that is, if a President is lucky to serve the maximum two terms so why yearning for a further four years if you have been in office more than once?” She quizzed.
Madam Akua Donkor again noted: “If John Mahama wins the Presidential election in a worst case scenario, it could plunged the country into an intractable constitutional crisis.”
According to her, “John Mahama swore the oath of office before taking over from the late Professor John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills. The aggregation of the number of years he has been in office as President is over and above four years – about seven years.”
Madam Akua Donkor who was once a close associate and advisor of the former President said it is morally and legally wrong for Mr Mahama to desperately seek another term of office. “It is a breach of the Ghana’s constitution and may send a bad signal and also serve as a precedent so the implications of his action should’nt be overlooked.”
“Akua Donkor’s concerns make a lot of sense because if for instance, Mr. Mahama is given a form to fill to compile his biodata and the question is asked : How many years did you serve your country as an elected President? Logically, the answer will be “seven years” and not four years.” A political analyst, K. K. Obeng send this text message in reaction to Akua Donkor’s concerns.
