ECG, GRIDCo To Upgrade Transformer To Boost Power Supply In Ashanti Region

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) have signed a strategic agreement to enhance electricity supply capacity in the Ashanti Region to meet growing demand.

As part of the initiative, an existing 66MVA transformer at the Bulk Supply Points managed by GRIDCo and ECG will be upgraded to a 145MVA power transformer.

This upgrade is expected to significantly boost installed capacity, ensuring a more stable electricity supply, particularly during peak hours between 7 PM and 11 PM.

Previously, the 66MVA transformer at the Anwomaso Bulk Supply Point (BSP) was frequently overloaded during peak periods. The upgrade will increase total installed capacity to 145MVA, improving supply reliability across the region and stabilizing electricity distribution in the greater Kumasi metropolis.

Addressing the media, Engineer Peter Kofi Fletcher highlighted the importance of the project in meeting both current and future electricity demands in Kumasi.

“We are upgrading a transformer from 66MVA to 145MVA, which essentially increases electricity capacity in Kumasi to accommodate rising demand. The existing capacity is quite constrained, and with the rapid development in the city, this upgrade is necessary to expand the system’s capacity,” he stated.

He assured customers of ECG’s commitment to improving service delivery and urged road and building contractors to consult ECG before beginning construction, as many power cables have been installed underground.

Additionally, he appealed to customers to pay their electricity bills promptly to support ongoing repair and expansion efforts.
