Prove your commitment to fighting corruption by withdrawing the appointment of BOG Governor – Manhyia South MP Tells Prez Mahama

Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and a private legal practitioner, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has called on President Mahama to withdraw the appointment of Dr. Johnson Asiama as the new Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

According to the MP, Dr. Asiama was in charge of banking supervision in Ghana from 2015 to 2016, during which the banking sector reportedly collapsed, leading to significant losses of capital and jobs.

Speaking on the Wontumi Tv Morning Show with Oheneba Nana Aseidu, the MP cited IMF and Bank of Ghana reports, which confirm the collapse of the banking sector under Dr. Asiama’s supervision.

Hon. Baffour Awuah argued that Dr. Asiama’s past actions raise serious questions about his competence and integrity. “If a person like him could supervise such activity, it’s clear he’s incompetent or negligent in the banking sector, the Bank of Ghana can’t be managed by a personality whose integrity is questionable.”

He stated that President Mahama’s decision to reappoint Dr. Asiama is a clear indication that he has not learned his lessons from the 2016 election defeat.

“For the President to reappoint such a character is an indication that the President endorses the activities of the past made by the nominee in the banking sector,”

The minority MPs in parliament have already echoed the MP’s concerns, calling for greater transparency and accountability in the appointment process.
