Arrest Obuasi AGA Lawlessness Before it Extends to My Constituency – Bekwai MP to President Mahama

I express my deepest grief and condolences to the families and residents of Obuasi, following the unfortunate loss of eight lives in a violent clash between persons believed to be “galamseyers” and the military. This incident is a stark reminder of the need for law and order in our society.

According to the Press release by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the incident was sparked by the unlawful entry of AGA property by the perpetrators. I commend the President’s directive to institute a full-scale investigation into the incident, and I urge him to expedite action on this matter.

As the Member of Parliament for Bekwai, I am deeply concerned that if this lawlessness is not arrested, it may have a rippling effect on other constituencies, including mine, which shares a boundary with Obuasi and has significant gold mining activities. As the adage goes, “if you see a man’s house on fire, you need to put in every effort to protect your own.”

Disturbingly, videos circulating on social media suggest that the action by the youth was incited by some journalists, notably Captain Smart of Onua TV. There is also a video purpoted to be the Obuasi West constituency Women’s Organiser before the elections also corroborate this fact. I condemn, in no uncertain terms, the use of media platforms to incite violence and lawlessness.

This incident serves as a test case for the President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, and how he handles it will be a litmus test of his commitment to upholding the rule of law. I urge him to demonstrate his resolve in addressing this matter swiftly and meticulously.

Let me be clear; a change in government does not mean a derailment of the laws of the state. The actions of some party sympathizers, who are engaging in unlawful capture or takeover of assets or offices handled by the previous government, are illogical and unacceptable.

In conclusion, I believe that this incident will be handled well, and measures will be put in place to prevent such occurrences in the future.
As a nation, we must prioritize the rule of law and ensure that justice is served.
