Since taking over Burkina Faso in 2022, President Ibrahim Traoré has made a visible push to develop sports in the country, combining major stadium projects with greater support for football development and showing a personal interest in the game by attending the final of the Coupe du Faso.
From the renovation of the historic Stade du 4-Août in Ouagadougou to the construction of the new Stade de Léguéma in Bobo-Dioulasso, Traoré’s administration has embarked on projects aimed at improving Burkina Faso’s sporting infrastructure.
Below are key sports projects under his leadership
The Stade du 4-Août had been unable to host international matches because of its condition. Under Traoré, renovation works were accelerated, with the facility receiving improvements to its pitch, stands, dressing rooms, lighting and other facilities.
The stadium was officially reopened in August 2025 and subsequently regained approval to host international matches, giving the national teams a proper home for major fixtures.
Another major project is the Stade de Léguéma in Bobo-Dioulasso.
The 15,000-capacity facility is being built to modern standards and is expected to provide Burkina Faso with another venue capable of hosting major domestic and international competitions.
The government has also turned its attention to the development of football personnel.
In July 2026, a programme was launched to improve the technical and physical-preparation skills of coaches working in the country’s top two divisions, as part of efforts to professionalise the domestic game.
Traoré has also demonstrated a personal interest in domestic football.
In May 2026, he attended the Coupe du Faso final at the Stade du 4-Août, where he interacted with the football community and watched the country’s premier domestic cup competition.
His involvement has extended to the national teams.
In August 2026, Traoré received Burkina Faso’s U20 team after their success at the UFOA-B U20 tournament, which secured their qualification for the 2027 U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.
During the meeting, he expressed concern about the conditions surrounding the young players and promised a different approach to supporting the national teams and the development of the next generation.
From stadium construction and renovation to coaching development, youth football and direct engagement with the national teams, Traoré’s time in office has seen the Burkinabe government take a more prominent role in the country’s sporting development.
