Ghana Water Limited is losing nearly half of the water it produces daily through illegal connections and physical leakages, the company’s Managing Director (MD), Adam Mutawakilu, has disclosed.
Mr Mutawakilu said the company currently produces about 219 million gallons of water daily, against a national demand of approximately 350 million gallons.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday, September 2, he said Ghana Water’s non-revenue water stood at 47.6% as of June 2026, a decrease from 51.6% in December 2025.
“In 2024, as at December, about 52.2% we are not able to account for. In 2025, as at December, it dropped to 51.6%. As at June 2026, it dropped to 47.6%,” he said.
He explained that illegal consumption accounts for about 78% of the unaccounted-for water, while physical leakages account for the remaining 22%.
“The water is not lost. It is consumed by Ghanaians, but illegally,” he said.
Mr Mutawakilu attributed some of the physical losses to the company’s ageing pipeline network, noting that some of the pipelines have been in use since the 1960s.
He said the company has put in steps to intensify efforts to replace its old pipelines and clamp down on illegal connections, as part of measures to reduce water losses and improve revenue collection.
Meanwhile, the MD said the water that comes from Ghana Water’s pipelines is safe to drink, assuring consumers of rigorous testing of both raw and processed water.
