We’ll Reinstate Torkornoo in 2028 — Afenyo-Markin

The Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has stated that his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), will reinstate former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo when it regains power in 2028.

He said the NPP considers Justice Torkornoo’s removal from office an injustice and believes the circumstances surrounding the decision warrant a reversal.

The Minority Leader made the comments in an interview with Accra-based Atinka TV, in which he criticised the process that led to the removal of the former Chief Justice.

He alleged that the decision to remove her formed part of what he described as a broader conspiracy involving some members of the Supreme Court.

The Minority Leader did not mince words, specifically singling out the current Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, and alleging that he was involved in the circumstances surrounding the removal of his predecessor.

“My Lord Paul Baffoe-Bonnie was part of the grand conspiracy against his predecessor, Gertrude Torkornoo. Her removal was a grand conspiracy, and he knows it, and we know it. But one day, one day, the true story will be told.

“I don’t see why that woman will not be reinstated when the NPP wins power. Her removal is an act of injustice,” he said.

The former Chief Justice is the first in Ghana’s Fourth Republic to be removed from office. She was appointed in June 2023, and her removal drew attention not only within the nation’s political landscape but also from international observers.
