The Minority Leader and Membr of Parliament(MP) for the Efutu Constituency, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo Markin has cautioned the ruling National Democratic Congress(NDC), to focus on governing rather than the political persecution they’ve been subjecting opponents to.
The leader spoke to the media during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration held to protest against what the party calls selective justice in the country.
The MP decried the “level” of corruption going on in the country citing a recent report by the IMF on GOLDBOD.
“The level of corruption in this government, the level of malfeasance. GOLDBOD alone, look at the losses that the IMF reported, over 9.6 billion,” he said, telling the government to pay critical attention to such losses rather than focusing on jailing innocent opponents.
He talked about a future NPP government where extremists will think of treating their opponents in such a similar fashion. An action he said moderates at the time will not be able to say anything about it.
“If the government does not adopt a system that would ensure that there is justice for all and this selective justice is pursued, what it means is that, in the future it will be difficult for moderates in NPP to restrain extremists who may be calling for a repeat of this action,” he said.
He gave some words of caution to the NDC government, telling them to slow down their horses as their time time in power will soon come to an end.
“I am saying that our friends in government must be measured, because you see they’ve already spent one and half years in office. Two years will come, we will enter next year, there will be election,” he stated.
He told the government to not let the currency of power deceive them, as the goodwill they have means trust from the people and as such their focus should be on the people.
“In Ghana, if you are a politician, you don’t take undue advantage of your goodwill. When you are elected, your job is to get to the ground, deliver your promises,” he added.
