British actor David Jonsson has been announced as the new Black Panther. The 32-year-old was unveiled by the film’s director, Ryan Coogler, on stage at Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con International presentation on Saturday with co-stars Letitia Wright and Winston Duke.
Jonsson, known for roles in Industry, The Long Walk and Alien: Romulus, will play the son of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa in the third Black Panther movie set to be released on December 15, 2028.
“The last time we got to make a movie, we introduced a character who is the son of the character that the great Chadwick Boseman played – our T’Challa – in that film,” Coogler said, according to the Guardian.
“And today, I want to tell you that in this next film, he grows up, he comes of age.”
Jonsson, born in London, started his career in the West End. His on-screen debut occurred in 2018 with a two-episode role in the British detective drama Endeavour, followed by his portrayal of Augustus “Gus” Sackey in the first two series of Industry from 2020 to 2022.
He subsequently landed a role in the 2025 adaptation of Stephen King’s thriller The Long Walk before winning the Bafta rising star award the same year.
“Thank you to this family that I have the honour and the blessing to join. I don’t want to say too much, because I want to let the screen do the talking,” Jonsson said.
The Industry star is set to appear in some upcoming movies such as The Chaperones, Benn/Eubank and Scandalous. He describes his heritage as Creole, with roots in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, the Caribbean and Sweden.
In “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” Wright took over as Black Panther from her late fellow star Boseman.
Boseman played T’Challa in the first “Black Panther” but died of colon cancer at age 43 in 2020, when Coogler was working on the sequel. The character T’Challa II was introduced as T’Challa and Nakia’s (Lupita Nyong’o) son in “Wakanda Forever.”
Director Coogler is returning for the third film, as well as Wright reprising her role as Shuri and Duke as M’Baku.
