Private Sector Credit Contracts Sharply By 14.5%

Private sector credit growth picked up in December 2022, partly reflecting continued portfolio rebalancing by banks and revaluation effects on foreign currency denominated credit, the Bank of Ghana has said at its 110th Monetary Policy Committee meeting held on Monday, 30 January 2023. In nominal terms, private sector credit increased by 31.8 per cent in December 2022, compared with 11.2 per cent in December 2021. In real terms, however, private sector credit contracted sharply by 14.5 per cent, compared with 1.3 per cent contraction over the review period, reflecting sustained price pressures. Economic activity moderated in the fourth quarter of 2022, the Bank of Ghana’s high frequency indicators has disclosed. The updated Composite Index of Economic Activity (CIEA) contracted by 6.2% in November 2022, compared with a growth of 10.2% in the same period of 2021. According to the Central Bank, the major items that weighed down the Index during the period were port activity, cement sales, imports, and industrial consumption of electricity. Debt Exchange: NIC To Suspend Minimum Capital Requirements, CAR Of Insurance Firms For 2 Years

As part of measures to mitigate the impact of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme on insurance companies, the National Insurance Commission will place a moratorium on the Minimum Capital Requirements (MCRs) and Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) on the insurers.
