A respected university lecturer, Mr. Ishaq Kyei Brobbey has cast doubt over statements by former President John Mahama that he would abolish the Electronic Transaction Levy (e-levy) in an unlikely event he becomes President again.
According to Mr. Brobbey, Mr. Mahama’s high ‘libido’ for money, would even make it extremely difficult for him to think about such a reckless move.
“E-levy can give us (Ghana) $1 billion and you (Mahama) claim when you come to power you will cancel it? You are a man who has high penchant for cash so there is no way you can cancel e-levy; but God forbid you become Ghana’s President soon”, Mr. Ishaq Brobbey said on Wontumi TV.
Former President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, 2 May 2022 announced the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government when it comes to power, will abolish the Electronic Transaction Levy (e-levy).
According to him, the opposition NDC is not opposed to taxation, however, the party is against taxes that burden the Ghanaian people.
But Mr. Brobbey reacted by urging Ghanaians to pooh-pooh the comments by Mr. Mahama. He remarked that if the idea of canceling E-levy had come from the late former President John Mills or John Rawlings, he would have believed it but certainly, not John Mahama.
