Popularity doesn’t insulate one from facing punishment for wrongdoing, lawyer Maurice Ampaw has told Dormaahene.
According to the celebrated lawyer, “the court deals with law. Every judge looks at the case before them so if you commit a crime, we don’t leave you because you are popular”.
He strongly argued that it was pure “nonsense” for the Dormaahene to call on the Attorney General to discontinue the trail because the people of Assin North have re-elected Gyakye Quayson as their Member of Parliament.
“You can’t say that because Assin people have shown faith in the man so you are ordering the Attorney General to order the court to stop the trail. What kind of nonsense is that? It is nonsense because it doesn’t make sense”, the private legal practitioner fired.
Maurice Ampaw also told Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, to stop championing an agenda to protect the Assin North Member of Parliament, James Gyakye Quayson from facing the music if he is found guilty by the court of lying to the state before becoming an MP.
In an interview on Wontumi TV which was monitored by Wontumionline.com, lawyer Maurice Ampaw described the appeal by Dormaahene to the Attorney General as disrespectful.
“If you want to respect the Attorney General it is not when you have met NDC members. He was not having the judge, lawyer or chief cap. He was speaking like a politician. If he wanted to appeal to the AG he should have written a formal petition in his capacity as chief or ordinary Ghana and the AG would have held it in confidence and away from the public”, he pointed out.
He also accused the Dormaahene of misleading the public on the issue and encouraging them to speak “politics” instead of “law”
“For you to stand at a place like Atta Mill anniversary and throw that bomb, you have raised the tension around the trail and you are the reason people are talking political and not law…it is as if Assin people determine what goes on in court, who are the Assin people? If you have finished voting does it concern the court? Does the court have business to do with the politics you are doing at Assin? Does the judge vote at Assin? So Assin people should give us a break”, he said.
