Ghanaians have been entreated not to trust former President John Mahama on issues relating to illegal gold mining, popularly known as galamsey, Lawyer George Oppong has cautioned.
Lawyer Oppong who is also the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) presiding member for Kwabre East, noted that Mr. Mahama has lost credibility in talking about galamsey fight due to some contradictory statements he has made in the past.
John Dramani Mahama has challenged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to demonstrate the political will to fight galamsey.
But responding to his comment on Wontumi TV, Lawyer Oppong stated that prior to the 2020 elections, Mr. Mahama was on record to have told illegal miners who were facing the wrath of the law that when he is given the mandate to rule, his government would free them and allow them to continue their illegalities.
“He promised to free people engaged in galamsey, he has done it before, when his party people threatened a whole Chief Justice, he freed them”, Lawyer Oppong said.
Mahama’s pledge to free illegal miners
Former President John Dramani Mahama has said that when he is elected president, all those who are into illegal mining activities popularly called ‘galamsey’, and have been arrested would be given their freedom.
In an engagement with a section of the members of the NDC, the former president pledged that he would ensure that those arrested for galamsey would be freed and given another chance to continue with their illegal mining activities.
“Eye Zu! When we win power, all those arrested for engaging in galamsey would be given amnesty for them to come back. We believe that whatever law they flouted, they’re remorseful so we shall free them and give them another chance to work as galamseyers” Mahama promised.
