Women’s Advocate, Rosemond Obeng Talks About The Need To Prioritize Sex Education

Women’s Advocate, Rosemond Obeng popularly known as ‘People’s Mother’ has spoken to children, teenagers, teachers and parents on the need to prioritize sex education at Alokpem in the Ada East district.

The program was put together by the Greater Accra National Service Personnel Association.

Students from the Junior and Senior High Schools, together with some parents and teachers as well as chiefs and Queens in the Ada East community graced the occasion.

Peoples Mother touched on what had been fundamentally wrong about our sex education approach in Ghana.

She specifically identified failure to teach children about the names of the private parts of the body for both the girl and boy child as a worrying cause.

Parents and Teachers virtually mention and teach children about parts of their bodies such as hands, legs, nose etc but will always shy away from the private parts.

She said the effect of the silence culture on the private parts surely results in misinformation when children and teenagers seek answers from all the wrong places.

People’s Mother admonished parents and teachers to be open minded and teach children all they need to know right from growing up,that way at any point in time when children start exploring their private parts, they would be knowledgeable to properly understand the dangers of having unprotected sex and most importantly how to indulge in safe sex.

In a nutshell, she said Ghanaian parents assume high moral standards for their children in the sense that they believe teenagers remain virgins till marriage, however the hardtruth is ,that assumption is false as some children even before their adolescent age, engage in unsafe sex.
