We’ll Restrain The OSP From Any Further Action Against Gordon Asare Bediako- GJA President
The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has described as worrying the phenomenon of unwarranted attacks, harassment and threats on the lives of journalists by state institutions and political figures.
Speaking during a Press Briefing in Accra, he noted that such a development was an affront to media freedom in a constitutional democracy.
He said, the decision by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to arrest Broadcast Journalist with Movement TV, Gordon Asare Bediako, was unacceptable and would not be countenanced.
“We have directed our legal team to head to court and seek judicial review on the matter. We will file an injunction application to restrain the OSP from any further action against Gordon Asare Bediako or any other journalist,” he said.
Reaffirming the GJA’s commitment to press freedom and the rule of law, Mr. Dwumfour stressed that journalists must be protected, not persecuted for their work.
“The Special Prosecutor must focus on his core mandate as Special Prosecutor and not deviate from it to become a special persecutor. He is a Special Prosecutor, not a special persecutor,”
“We firmly hold the view that such an overarch of authority by the OSP is not only unacceptable but also illegal. Accordingly, we will seek a declaration from a court of competent jurisdiction to nullify this action,” he said.
“We remain committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served within the boundaries of legal authorities,” he stated.
