The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it will not shield any officer involved in electoral malpractices in the upcoming December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections.
The electoral body says it remains committed to organising free, fair, and transparent elections.
Speaking at a press conference, the Deputy Chairperson of the EC, Dr. Bossman Asare, said the electoral body will ensure that those who engage in such practices are punished in accordance with the law.
“The commission would like to assure the public that it will not shield any of its officers, both permanent and temporarily found complacent in any electoral malpractices, and will always allow such persons to face the full rigours of the law,” he stated.
Meanwhile, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has posited that it remains the greatest threat to Ghana’s democracy.
Speaking at the Crusaders Against Corruption event in Accra, on the theme, “The Scarface of Corruption in Ghana: How Corruption Brings About Poverty,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe said: “We have had leaders; I am saying that at the moment, the greatest threat to our democracy is the electoral commission. That is the greatest threat to our democracy, and if we are not careful, we will lead this country into destruction.
“Mark my words. Why do I say so? How on earth can transfers be made from one particular constituency to another without the consent of the person? These are facts.”
