Dr Smart Sarpong, has said there is an urgent need to fill Parliament house with matured minds and not the ‘boys boys’ type of Parliamentarians.
The Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Social Science Research, Kumasi Technical University who spoke on Wontumi TV stated that the series of melees occurring in Parliament House recently, could have easily deescalated into a coup d’etat in the heydays of late former President Jerry John Rawlings.
“If we don’t have matured minds and this ‘boys boys’ continue, we could have had coup in Ghana. Jerry John Rawlings wouldn’t have encouraged this under his watch during his prime”, he emphatically said.
Last Monday, some MPs were engaged in a fistfight following disagreement on the E-levy bill. The fight ensued when the MPs were voting in a headcount to decide whether the E-levy bill should be accepted under a certificate of urgency.
The Minority had attempted to stop the First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei Owusu, who was presiding over the House, from leaving his seat and participating in the voting process.
