The Municipal Chief Executive Officer (MCE), for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem, Hon. Lawyer Solomon Ebo Appiah, has debunked claims about the importation of sugar for the Komenda sugar factory in the Central Region of Ghana.
In an interview on Movement in the Morning Political Show, the host, Kwaku Dawuro, asked him regarding the speculations about the government importing raw sugar for processing at the Komenda Sugar factory.
In response, he said, “the news headlines regarding the factory importing raw sugar for processing was misleading. “What I said was that we want to produce 50 kilograms of sugar a day and if our raw materials are not enough, we won’t sit and produce less rather we will import raw sugar which is not consumable and we will refine it here in Ghana for consumption”.
According to Mr. Ebo Appiah, the board of directors, for the Komenda sugar factory had gone out to check for sugarcane out-growers in the various towns to feed the factory and added that, the factory also has its sugar cane plantation which is about 22,500 acres at Sekyere Obuasi at the Winneba enclave.
“We are not importing raw sugar – we are planting our sugar canes here in Ghana’’, he highlighted.
He further stated, “the sugar factory that was destroyed by ex-President Mahama has been brought to life by President Akufo-Addo. The factory has been renovated with efficient machines, poly tanks, and all the essential technical items that are needed to keep the factory running. NDC members do not believe President Akufo Addo has been able to revamp the factory. Our hope is back and we appreciate the president for his immerse contribution”.
He points out that the government is building 3 million water reservoirs for the factory.
Meanwhile, the sugar factory was established in 1964 but operations were halted due to poor management and technical concerns.
