The debate surrounding the payment of salaries to wives of the President and Vice President has taken another twist as the Bono Regional Chairman for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has questioned former President Mahama over the $83,000 his government handed over to his wife just to go and watch a football match in USA.
The NPP Chairman known as Abronye, stated on Wontumi TV’s Nsempa Fie Show that Mr. Mahama is being a hypocrite and playing to the gallery when in 1998, he had supported the majority in Parliament to approve salaries for Presidential spouses.
Former President John Dramani Mahama has waded into controversies surrounding the payment of salaries for the wives of the President and Vice President.
In an article on his Facebook page, he described as ‘problematic’ “an attempt to sneak the First and Second Ladies into the article 71 office holders’ group”
According to him, the challenge is that the spouses of the President and Vice President are not captured among Article 71 Office Holders and, therefore, there is no legal or constitutional basis for it.
But Abronye responded to his statement by challenging him to provide legal justification for spending $83,000 on Lordina Mahama’s trip to America to watch a football match.
He therefore warned Mr. Mahama not to play to gallery noting that he stinks when it comes to paying undue moneys to his wife.
“You stink, so never talk about certain issues when they come up. You have been a very bad person and we can’t even quantify your evil deeds. Was your wife a minister when she was taking $83k?” Abronye quizzed.
