A 34-year-old visually impaired PhD applicant, Isaac Anin Baah, is considering legal action against Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) after his admission was unexpectedly revoked without explanation.
Mr Baah, who has a Master’s degree from KNUST, believes the decision may be rooted in discrimination due to his visual impairment.
In an interview, he revealed that his lawyer had sent multiple letters to the university seeking an explanation, but none were answered.
Mr Baah is now pursuing legal reliefs, including GH¢1 million in damages for the distress caused and the loss of scholarship opportunities.
“I applied to KNUST for a PhD in Public Health. Initially, I was granted admission, but it was later revoked without any reason given,” Baah said. “I tried to get clarification from the dean of the School of Public Health, but he couldn’t provide any answers. My lawyer wrote several letters to the university seeking an explanation, but they never responded.”
“I initially warned them that if this issue wasn’t resolved, I would take legal action. Despite this, they remained silent, so I am now seeking the court’s intervention. I want the court to ask them why my admission was revoked and to provide an explanation,” he told Accra based Channel One News.
In response, KNUST acknowledged some errors in the admission process but stated that these errors had been corrected.
The University Relations Officer, Dr. Norris Bekoe confirmed that KNUST has been served with the legal writ and clarified that Baah was expected to proceed with the admission process after the error was rectified.
