VIDEO: “Hon-Hon” Soup among Other Local Delicacies Best To Fight Off Coronavirus – Kusi Boafo
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Public Sector Reform, Mr. Thomas Kusi Boafo, has added his voice to the alarm raised by the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, concerning the hike in the coronavirus cases in the country.
Mr Kusi Boafo who was speaking on Wontumi TV/Radio early morning Talk Show programme on Monday, said the disclosure made by the President is scary and Ghanaians should do all they can to help control the spread of the disease.
According to Mr Kusi Boafo what can save the country from the situation getting out of hand is for Ghanaians to eat more local foods to boost their immune system.
“We have a lot of balanced foods whose ingredients are grown locally without any agrochemical inputs to enhance plant growth which offer the best protection for the human tissues, cells and organs..” He explained.
Mr. Kusi Boafo continued, local foods are the best because of their nutritional value which do not only suit the tropical climate but provides the best nutrition when it comes to balanced dieting but most of this no longer on the list of popular local cuisine
“Regrettably some of the best local nutrition exists only in name. They have become defunct..” He noted.
He said local food substances most of which do not have English translation such as” aweesu”, “akatimtim”, “tiko” or “hon-hon” soup prepared with ingredients such as snail, and flavoured with salted fish known locally as “bonbone” and other local ingredients are friendly to all the vital organs and boost one’s metabolism.”
He noted that when these traditional foods are regularly consumed “there can hardly be a situation where one can contract the CONVID-19.”
“In my youthful days there was nothing like coloured soup. What was a common delicacy was greenish soups full of ingredients that gave a lot of vitality unlike fried rice which I became familiar with only after I had attained 30 years.” He recalled .
PresidentAkufo-Addo, who recommended a regular consumption of fresh cocoyam leaves or ‘nkontonmire as a remedy to protect the body from the pandemic in one of his public addresses observed on Sunday that, “on the average, two hundred (200) new cases of COVID infections daily. The number of patients requiring hospitalisation and intensive care is rising. The number of severe cases, which stood at eighteen (18) a week ago, has increased sharply to one hundred and twenty (120). Two weeks ago, there was no critical case, we now have thirty-three (33) in our treatment facilities.
Again, according to statistics from the Ghana Health Service, the considerable number of persons who are severely ill are, surprisingly, relatively youthful persons, with no previous underlying health conditions. The number of confirmed deaths has increased, sadly, from three hundred and thirty-eight (338) persons to three hundred and fifty-two (352) within the period. “
