U-20 AFCON: Over-Reliance On Foreign Players Cost Ghana – Ex-Nsoatreman FC GM
Former General Manager of the now-defunct Nsoatreman FC, Eric Alagidede, has criticized the Black Satellites’ reliance on foreign-based players following their early exit from the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ghana bowed out of the tournament in heartbreaking fashion on Monday, losing 5-4 in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in extra time.
Alagidede pointed fingers at head coach Desmond Ofei, whose squad featured 14 foreign-based players.
In the wake of the team’s failure to qualify for the U-20 World Cup, he questioned the coach’s selection strategy.
“You [Desmond] are the head coach and preferred foreign-based players, and you were allowed to get them, so when you don’t qualify, you obviously have to take the blame,” Eric told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.
“Ghana has never had a squad dominated by foreign-based players for an Afcon competition. So, if you send 14 foreign-based players, what are you telling us?” he quizzed.
Ghana’s elimination means the nation’s wait for a return to the U-20 World Cup continues, with their last appearance coming in 2015.
