A senior Lecturer and Researcher at Kumasi Technical University, Dr. Smart Sarpong has said that technology and innovation have become the foundation of every successful economy, therefore countries must advantage.
Speaking on the Movement TV morning show, he disclosed that the Ministry of Education under the NPP government is keen on promoting Technical And Vocational Education Training (TVET) in the various schools. The structural reforms by the government in the educational sector are dedicated to promoting technical and vocational education specifically.
He revealed, that before the implementation of the TVET program, a lot of young students escaped from undertaking TVET courses because it was tagged as a course for people with low intelligence. Today, it has become a very lucrative course that can be taken at the university level.
He said, “The government has started an initiative to train professionals in the informal sector. The first phase of the initiative will commence in May 2022 and it will train 1200 people. After the training, participants will be given certificates for participation. This will add to their credibility and give them easy access to jobs and contracts.
Innovation and creativity have become vital in boosting the economy, it has led to the provision of pragmatic solutions to solving very critical problems”, he said.
