Volta Lake Breaks Banks; 2,500 Residents Displaced

The Volta Lake has broken its banks leading to the displacement of 2,500 residents from nine communities within the Pru East District. The victims comprise 1,302 males and females 1,252, according to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO). Communities affected are Kobre Nsuano, Pentecost Nsuano, Adiembra, Fanteakura, Tokobikope, Tonka, Agokope, Logakope and others. The rising flood situation in Kumasi is largely independent of increase in rainfall and current temperature patterns. That is the major finding in a research by the Department of Geography and Rural Development of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. The findings are published in the journal, Cities. The current debate suggests that climate change is behind the rising urban flooding in Ghana. The Municipal Operations Director for NADMO in New Juaben North, Twumasi Kankam, has said that human activities coupled with engineering works should be blamed for the perennial flooding. This comes after one hundred residents of Amanase in Ayensuano District were on Saturday, October 1, 2022, displaced as river Ayensu also over flooded its banks following days of torrential rainfall.
