The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has reported a significant increase in online blackmail cases in Ghana.
Following a March 2024 alert, which noted a 254% year-on-year rise in such incidents for the first two months of the year, an additional 141 reports were filed between March and June. So far this year, 226 cases have been recorded, resulting in a total loss of GH¢ 112,209.
Cyber Security Authority exposed the modus operandi of these blackmailers, which involves initiating friendships on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok before moving the conversation to WhatsApp.
Over time, the malicious actors develop these friendships into intimate relationships, luring targeted individuals into making nude video calls on WhatsApp, which are secretly recorded.
The CSA has issued several recommendations to protect against such incidents.
They advise being wary of quickly progressing online relationships, especially those leading to requests for intimate content.
Individuals are urged not to share such content, avoid accepting online friend requests from unknown individuals, and be cautious of video calls from strangers on social media platforms.
The CSA also recommended using strong passwords to protect sensitive data, using only reputable mobile device repair services, and avoiding the capture or storage of nude images or videos on personal devices.
They cautioned against unsolicited messages or offers, particularly those promising money or business opportunities.
The CSA continues to monitor the situation and urges the public to report any suspicious activities.
