Majority Women Caucus in Parliament has condemned actor and politician, John Dumelo’s claims that Lydia Alhassan had a role in the death of her husband.
John Dumelo, while speaking on Accra-based TV3, accused Lydia Alhassan of killing her husband to pave the way for her to become MP after his death.
His comments, which were met with contempt, have been condemned by many who believe they were reckless and unnecessary.
The actor and National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wugon has since apologized.
But addressing the press, the Majority Women Caucus condemned the actor’s recklessness.
“This outrageous and contemptible statement is not only a vicious attack on Hon. Lydia Alhassan but also an insult to all women who work tirelessly to serve their communities and positions in leadership.
Her dedication to public service and her relentless effort in the sanitation and water resource sector as Minister has earned her widespread respect among her colleagues. Does his comments also mean the same for the NDC MP for Shai Osudoku, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Oklu, who also became an MP when her husband died?
We fully support her decision to seek legal redress and encourage her to take this case to a court of competent jurisdiction where Mr Dumelo will be compelled to prove this baseless and malicious allegation. This legal action should serve as a powerful warning to anyone who attempts to slander or defame women for political gains,” the Majority women caucus said when they addressed the media.
