An assistant Secretary of the New Patriotic Party(NPP), at the Dome-Kwabenya constituency Maxwell Otoo, has stated that the decision by the government to the IMF doesn’t mean the country’s economy has been mismanaged, but it needs support.
Speaking to Kwaku Dawuro on Movement In The Morning Show, Otoo noted that ” the current government’s move to seek support from the International Monitory Fund (IMF) has become necessary due to two things; COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war which has affected many economies of which Ghana is no an exception, hence the need for this support and not like the Mahama’s administration when there was no global crisis yet the country sought for support from the IMF.”
He further urged that Ghanaians focus on the benefit the country will gain which outweighs the conditions.
Stressing that “COVID-19 has negatively affected the country’s economy. The entire country was shut down as people lost their jobs- it has therefore become necessary that we seek support from the IMF due to the expenditures made during the height of the pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.”
He was however quick to add that he’s expecting the information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, to organize townhall meetings as he engages regional Executives and give them the necessary resources to educate and inform Ghanaians on why the NPP is going to the IMF.
