Resident Engineer Outlines Plans To safeguard Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange From Misuse

The Resident Engineer overseeing the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange Project, Owusu Sekyere Antwi, has revealed plans to erect a protective fence around the roundabout leading to Kaneshie after the project’s completion.

This measure, according to Mr. Antwi, is intended to curb unauthorized activities such as hawking and other disruptive behaviors that could compromise the functionality and aesthetics of the newly constructed interchange.

Scheduled for inauguration on Friday, November 29, the interchange is expected to alleviate the persistent traffic congestion that has long affected the area.

In an interview on Thursday, November 28, Mr. Antwi stressed the importance of maintaining order to ensure the project’s success. He noted that proactive steps are essential to avoid issues similar to those faced at other interchanges, like the Flower Pot Interchange, where managing hawker activities has been a challenge.

“To prevent hawking, we plan to fence the roundabout. Additionally, the Obetsebi Lamptey statue, temporarily removed during construction, will be restored. Visitors can learn about its history, and walkways will be constructed to prevent vehicles from climbing onto them,” he told Citi News.

Mr. Antwi also advised commuters to avoid the Circle-to-Kaneshie stretch to reduce traffic delays caused by ongoing construction. He recommended alternative routes, including the road behind the cemetery toward the TV Africa area.

“The traffic situation around the construction site has been intense this week due to excavations and roadblocks near Awudome. We encourage the public to use alternative routes to minimize delays,” he added.
