The Commissioner of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Col. Kwadwo Damoah (Rtd) has responded to damaging allegations by some members of the National Democratic Congress that he used his position as a senior member of the Ghana Armed Forces to recruit “Akans” and “New Patriotic Party” members into the service.
In an exclusive interview with Oheneba Asiedu on the Wontumi Morning Show, Col. Kwadwo Damoah (Rtd) explained that under the leadership of the erstwhile NDC government, a committee was set up to investigate claims that he had deliberately used his position to favour NPP members and Akans into the military.
He cited former Greater Accra Regional Minister under former President John Mahama, Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo as one of the persons who claimed on radio that the NDC had issues with him (Damoah) because they believe he was recruiting a particular tribe into the service.
“Afotey-Agbo spoke on Obour FM and stated that the NDC won’t allow me to recruit NPP members and Akans into the Ghana Armed Forces…Then the spokesperson for the Ghana Armed Forces at the time kept changing his storyline and allegations against me after they had damaged me…”, he said.
Col. Damoah (Rtd) added that “a committee was then setup to investigate the matter, they had a clear purpose to pin me down but I presented all evidence till they had nothing against me”.
Giving a detailed account of what transpired during the said recruitment exercise, Col. Damoah (Rtd) recounted he ensured that tenets of the constitution was respected during the process.
“In our constitution there is a directive principle of state policy which directs us on how we recruit people in public offices. It gives room for reasonable regional and gender balance into public office. We have statistics on our population so it was based on that the recruitment was made.”
