A former National Nasara Coordinator of the New Patriotic Party(NPP), Abubakar Suleman better known as Lakulaku, is of the opinion that the decision by the government to subscribe to an International Monetary Fund(IMF) bailout should be announced by the President, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo or a cabinet Minister in a national address.
Sharing his thoughts on what the negotiations with the IMF will be on Movement In The Morning Show with Kwaku Dawuro on Wontumi Radio/Movement TV Lakulaku stated, “there are a lot of Ghanaians with so many concerns over this decision by the Government due to past incidents. Therefore, for a decision as major as this, the President himself or the finance Minister and his deputies should have addressed Ghanaians in a live telecast or press briefing explaining why it has become necessary that the country seeks support from the IMF rather than the Minister of Information releasing just a statement out of the blue; this is what has contributed to the hullabaloo”.
According to him, this has also made the job of the party communicators difficult as some are unable to defend and justify why the government is going to the IMF even after it had reiterated several times that it wouldn’t resort to this program.
“It’s like the Ministers and their deputies have left the job for the communicators, meanwhile we are not regarded like the Ministers- we are also not provided with the needed information to do so”, he added.
Lakulaku stressed that “there’s nothing wrong with Ghana going to the IMF, but the President or the finance Ministers should address Ghanaians and explain things better”.
