Power cuts happen multiple times in a single evening – NDC MP’s Cries Out

Members of Parliament from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are raising red flags over persistent and severe power outages commonly referred to as ‘dumsor’—plaguing several constituencies across the country.

Speaking during a recent engagement between Parliament’s Energy Committee and key stakeholders in the power sector, MPs Albert Tetteh Nyarkotey (Yilo Krobo), Yao Gomado (Akan), and Richard Kwami Sefe (Anlo) shared alarming reports of how the erratic power supply is crippling economic activity and disrupting essential services.

Albert Tetteh Nyarkotey painted a dire picture of the situation in Yilo Krobo, where outages reportedly stretch for days. “Power goes off for two or three days straight. This is severely affecting our hospitals, our schools, and the Eastern University,” he said, warning that continued inaction would deepen hardship in already-struggling communities.

Yao Gomado, representing the Akan constituency, described the electricity situation as chaotic. “Power cuts happen multiple times in a single evening. The lights come on for an hour, then go off and on again several times—it’s frustrating for everyone,” he said. He expressed particular concern for cold store operators and other small businesses who risk losing their inventory and income.

Richard Kwami Sefe of Anlo echoed the concerns, describing a pattern of intermittent blackouts every few hours. “The power goes off for two minutes, then comes back, then off again in three hours. It’s a cycle that makes daily life unpredictable and unbearable,” he noted.

The MPs called for immediate, coordinated action by power generation and distribution agencies to restore stability to the national grid, stressing that the ongoing outages are having far-reaching social and economic consequences.

“The longer this continues, the more livelihoods are destroyed,” said Gomado.
