An Associate Professor at the University of Environment and Sustainable development, Prof Edward Wiafe, has said that planting tress in Ghana will create more jobs for the youth.
The President of Ghana, H.E Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo recently launched the 2022 edition of the Green Ghana Day under the theme ‘Mobilizing for a Greener Future’ to plant 20 million tress. The project took place this morning at the Efua Sutherland park.
The purpose of the project according to the President is to create a shared effort to bring back our beautiful scenery.
Professor Wiafe speaking on the Green Ghana Project which kicked off today said “Ghana’s environmental care is at stake but there’s still hope. Today, our natural forest is turning into an artificial land, illegal small scale mining (Galamsey) has taken over and our water bodies have become rubbish dumping site. Sadly, people are blaming it on climate change, but we can’t always blame it on climate change-the only way to fight against climate action is to plant more tress. And It takes our collective effort to protect our environment”.
He further stated that promotion of national regeneration is very significant in protecting the environment, hence the need for Ghanaians to join the Green Ghana project even after today.
“Tress are very important because it can serve as a source of employment-we can sell the woods and the seeds”, he stressed.
He indicated that having an environmental discourse goes beyond planting trees and called on government and individuals to channel some of the energy in the water pollution conversation because several human activities are destroying them.
